Nel 1976/1977, Pentax introdusse la fotocamera a pellicola ME 35mm SLR. Le ME sono state la risposta di Pentax a una nuova tendenza verso la compattezza delle fotocamere SLR, iniziata con il lancio della Olympus OM-1 nel 1972.
La fotocamera Pentax ME a priorità di apertura automatica con otturatore elettronico sul piano focale da 8 s a 1/1000 s, sincronizzato a 1/100 s. Le tendine delle persiane erano di metallo e avevano un movimento verticale. Non c'era la ghiera dell'otturatore e la fotocamera non poteva essere utilizzata in modalità manuale, ad eccezione delle esposizioni B e 1/100. L'esposimetro digitale inventato da Pentax era del tipo a ponderazione centrale TTL ad apertura aperta standard. Si attivava con una leggera pressione sul pulsante di rilascio.
