Understanding How We Grade and Test Every Film Camera
Every film camera listed on our site goes through a detailed inspection and testing process before it’s graded.
Our in-house technicians follow a consistent checklist to make sure every camera performs exactly as it should,
from the first frame to the last.
We start with a full mechanical check, testing shutter speeds, film advance, self-timer, and metering accuracy. Next comes the optical inspection, where viewfinder clarity, mirror alignment, and lens condition are carefully examined. Built-in light meters are verified against a calibrated reference meter to ensure accuracy.
Each camera is then cleaned and serviced, with dust removed, foam seals replaced, and contacts refreshed as needed. Finally, every camera is photographed, reviewed, and signed off before being listed for sale.
Every film camera we sell is graded using our own professional standard. This ensures you know exactly what to expect — whether you’re buying a collector’s piece or a well-used workhorse. Each grade reflects both cosmetic condition and mechanical performance, verified by our in-house technician before listing.
Grade | Description | Typical Condition Details |
---|---|---|
Mint (M) | Exceptional example – looks almost new and performs perfectly. | No visible wear or marks. Viewfinder crystal clear, lens spotless, and all functions working precisely. May include original box or packaging. |
Excellent (EXC) | Lightly used and fully functional with minimal cosmetic signs of age. | A few small surface marks or light brassing on edges, but overall very clean. All shutter speeds accurate, metering responsive. |
Very Good (VG) | Well cared for and fully working, with moderate cosmetic wear. | Minor scratches or signs of use on body or controls. Viewfinder may show faint dust or hairline marks. No impact on performance. |
Good (G) | Reliable, fully working example showing clear signs of regular use. | Noticeable cosmetic wear, small dents or paint loss possible. Mechanically sound with accurate shutter and transport. |
User (U) | Fully functional but with heavy cosmetic wear or minor age-related quirks. | Clear wear, dents, or patina. May show slight meter variance or other age-consistent traits, but still ready to shoot film confidently. |
Every camera we sell has already been through its inspection, testing, and grading — but our commitment doesn’t end there. We stand by every piece of equipment, because these cameras aren’t just collectables — they’re made to be used.
Our technician inspects every camera by hand, checking shutter speeds, film advance, light meter accuracy, viewfinder clarity, and cosmetic condition. The grade reflects both appearance and performance.
Yes. Wherever possible, we load and test with real film to ensure consistent exposure and reliable operation before grading.
Yes. Lenses, flashes, and accessories are graded separately using the same standards — with clear details in each product listing.
Absolutely. Every listing includes detailed, high-resolution photos of the actual camera you’ll receive — no stock images. If you’d like to see a specific angle, contact us and we’ll send more.
Yes. “User” grade simply means more visible cosmetic wear — not mechanical faults. These cameras are tested, fully operational, and ideal for photographers who value function over cosmetics.
Our in-house scale is based on decades of hands-on experience with vintage cameras. It gives a consistent and transparent standard that matches what real photographers expect.
