En 1976/1977, Pentax presentó la cámara de película SLR ME de 35 mm. Las ME fueron la respuesta de Pentax a una nueva tendencia hacia la compacidad en las cámaras SLR, que comenzó con el lanzamiento de la Olympus OM-1 en 1972.
La cámara automática Pentax ME con prioridad de apertura con obturador electrónico de plano focal de 8 s a 1/1000 s, sincronizado a 1/100 s. Las cortinas de persiana eran metálicas y tenían un movimiento vertical. No había dial de obturador y la cámara no se podía usar en modo manual, excepto para exposiciones B y 1/100. El medidor de luz digital inventado por Pentax era del tipo ponderado central de apertura abierta TTL estándar. Fue activado por una ligera presión en el botón de liberación.
