Medium format film is larger—typically 120 film with a frame size around 6×4.5 cm or bigger—offering much higher image resolution, richer tonal gradation, and a smoother depth of field compared to 35mm.

It’s ideal if you want sharper detail, superior dynamic range, and that signature film look—great for portraits, landscapes, or high-resolution scans. The trade-off is size, weight, and cost.

It’s highly recommended—medium format cameras capture incredible detail, making small shakes noticeable. A tripod helps ensure maximum sharpness, especially in low light or long exposures.

Film and development are more expensive than 35mm—expect around £10–15 per roll (12–16 exposures) plus processing costs. But the boost in image quality and creative control is often worth it.
